Visit to the Memorial Hall

On wednesday 18th November the young people from the Cathedral Youth Club went on a visit to the Memorial Hall. We had the oportunity to learn about the Apprentice Boys who closed the City Gates during the siege of Derry in 1689. We  saw many historical objets related to the history of the Apprentice Boys fraternal society. We also learned about the Celebration of the Gates or the "Lundy Day" which takes place in the first Saturday of December.

The Celebrations start with the symbolic firing of a cannon on the city's historic walls at midnight. 13 members of a Parent Club will then make their way to each of the four original City gates, as the 13 apprentices did in 1688.

The main celebrations begin later on Saturday with the visiting Branch Clubs and bands parading from the Waterside to the Memorial Hall. The main parade then makes its way from Society Street around the City Centre to a service of thanksgiving in St Columb's Cathedral. Following the service, the parade makes its way back to Bishop Street for the traditional burning of Lundy the Traitor.

We saw the Lundy the Traitor that was prepared for the burning.

Last Friday the young people from the Cathedral Youth Club planted 99 crosses in the Apprentice Boys Garden in memory of the 99 local men who were lilled in the First World War, many of them from the Fontain area. It was great to see members of the community come for the service conducted by Rev. Dr. T. Robert Buick and Very REv'd William W. Morton. We also appreciate Duputy Consuler Mayor Mary Hamilton taking time out of her busy schedule to come to service in the Fountain

CR8 Change Magazine

In the following we present you a part of the CR8 Change Magazine.
"Such a lot of positive work has taken place over the past 6 months with many meetings, lobbying and phone calls. At last we now have a MUGE pitch and Play park, both of these facilities will have a huge impact on the social life of young people living in the Fountain. We would like to express sincere thanks and appreciation to the Department of Social Development, City Council in Londonderry and Western education & Libary Board for the completion of these projects.
the Summer Scheme again proved to be a huge success creating a number of diversions for our young people and resulting in a decrease in Interface anti-social behaviour.
As always I would place on record our thanks to our sponsors Lloyds TSB Foundations and Peace III without whom our work would be severely diminished. On behalf of the Youth Club I received a plaque from The Mayor to mark our 40 year Anniversary. We will be organising events to celebrate this Anniversary as we go forward to the UK City of Culture 2013."
